Dr Kieran Baxter’s research is focused on capturing the changes in arctic and glacial landscapes through a pioneering combination of archive images and 3D photogrammetry techniques. This allows Dr Baxter to visualise landscapes, some over a century old, in 3D and directly compare them to the current day equivalent.

I was honoured to join him in Chamonix and film his early research into this technique, recreating the iconic balloon flight of Eduard Spelterini over Chamonix valley from 1909. I also filmed numerous time-lapse sequences which I edited into my own short montage, viewable here.

The data captured on the photogrammetry flight was sobering, and laid the foundation of Dr Baxter’s continued research with newer visualisations commissioned by the BBC for Frozen Planet II, and he continues his research at the University of Iceland.
